PLEASE GIVE BLOOD at LIFELINE Blood Services , 183 Sterling Farms Drive, Jackson, Monday through Sat, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. or when a LIFELINE BLOODMOBILE visits your community this month.
Donors who are cancer free for 5 years may now be eligible as a blood donor. You can find our Cancer Deferral Reinstatement Form here. Or look in our How Can I Donate? section!
Here are some stories of past donors who have been reinstated:
Long time blood donor and ‘voice of Jackson media’, Tom Mapes, has been giving blood most of his life. However, when a cancer diagnosis stopped him from giving blood, he thought he would have to give up one of his favorite ways to serve others. Fortunately, when he heard about the new reinstatement policy for blood donors with a history of cancer, he investigated, had his doctor complete the appropriate form and after approval by LIFELINE’s Medical Director, Tom gave blood again after many years. He’s thrilled and challenges other cancer survivors to see if they may qualify to ‘get back in the game’ of saving lives.
Before her cancer scare in January of 2009, Cherie Parker was a dedicated blood donor, having reached the 10 gallon mark. Not only was the cancer surgery, treatment and recovery challenging, the sadness of not being able to donate blood any longer was very disheartening and depressing for her. Because, you see, not only did Parker understand the need for blood because of her career as LIFELINE Blood Services Public Relations Coordinator, but she was a personal recipient of four units of precious blood during her health crisis. ‘Being able to sit in the donor chair again was like a miracle,’ she says. ‘God has given me another chance to help be a “miracle” to someone who needs blood,’ she added.
